Climate and Weather of Kenya

Kenya experiences a diverse range of climates, from a tropical rainforest climate in the southwest to a tropical monsoon climate in central and southeastern Kenya. Furthermore, the northwest and northeast regions exhibit a warm steppe and desert climate. The southern region, south of Nairobi, features various microclimates.

Most areas in Kenya alternate between a rainy season and a dry season. The timing of the rainy season differs depending on the location, and some places, like Nairobi and Tsavo National Park, experience two wet and dry cycles. These areas undergo a shorter rainy spell around November/December, followed by a more intense rainy season from March to early June. If you're considering a safari, it's advisable to bypass these months.

The coastal town of Mombasa typically has a singular rainy season that begins in April and concludes in June. The dry season there isn't entirely devoid of rain but sees a significant reduction in precipitation.

Countrywide, the hottest months span from December to March. July through September offers an idyllic sun-soaked vacation, with delightful warmth and temperatures peaking between 25°C and 29°C. Sunshine is abundant with sporadic showers.

The sweltering phase from December to March is also a prime time for a coastal getaway in Kenya. While it can be marginally hotter, the humidity is more intense, especially along the coast. Coastal regions also endure heightened humidity in April and May, but this is often moderated by monsoon breezes.

For those planning a safari, the drier summer months are optimal. The weather is agreeably warm, accompanied by somewhat chillier nights, particularly in the elevated plains. Generally, precipitation is low during this period, enhancing wildlife visibility. As landscapes dry up, animals trek to locations still abundant in water.

The grand migration also amplifies the allure of a Kenyan safari. From July to October, vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya in search of lush pastures and water. By October or November, they journey back south to the Serengeti.
