Located at an altitude of 2,300 meters (7,545 ft), the city of Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan. Thimphu is a relatively small and quiet capital, with more of a village feel than that of a typical capital city.

The city has a China climate (dry winters and relatively warm summers), during which the monsoon brings significant rainfall. With an average minimum temperature of 15°C (59°F) and a maximum of over 26°C (79°F), the summer period (June through August) is pleasant. With about 5 to 6 hours of sunshine per day and around 20 rainy days per month, it is the wettest time of the year. In winter, most days are dry, and the sun shines more often than in summer. However, winter temperatures are much lower: a few degrees below freezing at night, and between 5°C (41°F) and 15°C (59°F) during the day.
