How we source our climate data

Every figure on Weather & Climate, from averages to historical data to forecasts, comes from established meteorological sources. Here is where our numbers come from.

Monthly temperature & rainfall averages

The monthly high, low and average temperatures and the rainfall figures on our city, region and country pages come from Foreca, based on the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service. They are 30-year climate averages for the 1991–2020 period, the standard reference period the World Meteorological Organization uses to describe a location's present-day climate.

Sunshine, humidity, wind & sea temperature

Sunshine hours, humidity, wind and sea temperature come from long-term measurements at official weather stations. Where a place has no station of its own, we use the nearest one with reliable records and show how far away it is.

Historical weather

For around 5,000 popular cities we also show historical weather going back decades, based on data from Visual Crossing. We review this data and leave out days with obvious errors.

Forecasts

Our 10-day, hourly and current-conditions forecasts come from MET Norway, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, and update throughout the day.
