Cabarete is an absolute paradise for kite and windsurfing enthusiasts, attracting surfers from around the globe who flock to conquer its magnificent waves. The sight of these athletes in action is truly spectacular. On closer examination of the map, you'll discover that Cabarete is comprised of two bays, ensuring a consistent presence of wind on the beach. In fact, experts regard it as one of the world's premier spots for wind and kite surfing.

Situated along the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic, Cabarete is approximately 19 km (11.8 miles) away from Puerto Plata Airport. It occupies a prime location directly on the beach, with a designated area known as "kitebeach." This spot hosts international wind and kite surfing competitions every year, and as the day progresses, you'll witness the true masters showcasing their skills.

Renowned for its powerful winds and impressive waves, Cabarete also offers versatility. Mornings, before 11 am, provide the perfect opportunity for (semi) beginners to venture into the sea with minimal wind and gentle waves. However, from 1 pm onwards, the wind strengthens, the waves become higher, and the surfing becomes more challenging. Whether you're a novice or an experienced surfer, most people ride the waves within 30-40 meters from the reef in the bay.

Thanks to the influx of sports enthusiasts who visit Cabarete annually, the place exudes a vibrant atmosphere while maintaining a super relaxed vibe. Additionally, the exuberant nightlife is another reason to consider a visit. Beach bars line the shores, offering late-night enjoyment accompanied by plenty of rum.

What else to do in Cabarete

Where to stay

If you are looking for a special place to relax after surfing and you are not on a budget we recommend the Cabarete Boutique Eco Lodge Beachfront. We loved everything about this hotel. The staff is super nice and very professional.

A big plus is the location right at the beach and the beds are super comfortable. Highly recommended.

Best time to visit

For the best experience, plan your visit to Cabarete between January and April, June and October, or December. During these months, you can expect warm temperatures and minimal rainfall. December to March is particularly renowned for the highest waves. For more detailed climate information about Cabarete, click here.
