Sri Lanka in January: Which Coast Has the Best Weather?

January strongly favors Sri Lanka's west and south coasts. Negombo averages 31°C (88°F) during the day with only 48 mm (1.9 in) of rain and 248 hours of sunshine. Hikkaduwa and Mirissa are similarly sunny, with around 250 hours, warm tropical temperatures and moderate rainfall. The east coast is less reliable at this time of year: Weather & Climate identifies January as part of the rainy season in places such as Arugam Bay, while Trincomalee's climate remains in transition after its wetter November and December period. Inland, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are cooler and receive more rain. For a January beach trip built around weather, the west and south coasts are the strongest choices.

The west coast is driest among the major beach areas compared
Negombo has the lowest rainfall of the popular coastal destinations shown in Weather & Climate's January overview. Days average 31°C (88°F), nights 24°C (75°F), and monthly rainfall is only 48 mm (1.9 in) over about four days. Sunshine reaches 248 hours.
That combination is especially strong for travelers arriving through Colombo and wanting immediate beach weather. The west coast is hot, bright and relatively dry without requiring a long transfer south.
Weather & Climate's broader January data shows that precipitation across Sri Lanka ranges from 43 mm (1.7 in) in Chilaw to 299 mm (12 in) around Adams Peak. The national spread is large enough that choosing a region matters far more than looking at a single country average.
The south coast is almost as sunny
Hikkaduwa averages 29°C (84°F) during the day and 25°C (77°F) at night, with 78 mm (3.1 in) of rain over around five days and 250 hours of sunshine. Mirissa is slightly warmer at 30°C (86°F), with 86 mm (3.4 in) of rain and the same 250 hours of sunshine.
Weligama is extremely similar to Mirissa: 30°C (86°F) days, 24°C (75°F) nights, 89 mm (3.5 in) of rain, five rainy days and 250 sunshine hours. The small differences between these south-coast destinations are less important than the much larger contrast with the highlands and the seasonally wetter east.
For a route that combines beaches with Galle, the south coast is therefore a very strong January choice. You give up only a little dryness compared with Negombo and gain a long stretch of coastal destinations with very similar weather.
What about Sri Lanka's east coast?
The east coast follows a different seasonal pattern. Weather & Climate's annual pages for Arugam Bay, Trincomalee and nearby beaches identify the wetter period around the northeast monsoon rather than the southwest-monsoon pattern that affects the opposite side of the island.
For Arugam Bay, Weather & Climate specifically lists January among the rainy-season months. The location remains warm, with January daytime temperatures around 29°C (84°F) and nights around 24°C (75°F), but the climate page recommends the drier part of the year later on. Trincomalee and Nilaveli are also coolest in January at around 28°C (82°F) during the day and 25°C (77°F) at night, but the indexed annual pages do not provide a verified January precipitation number in text. For that reason, no January rainfall figure is inserted here.
If you are choosing a coast solely for January weather, the west and south are therefore the safer evidence-based choices. The east is better saved for a month when its own dry season is established.
Kandy is cooler and less sunny than the coast
Kandy averages 27°C (81°F) during the day and 19°C (66°F) at night, with 108 mm (4.3 in) of rain over around six days. Sunshine reaches 166 hours. Compared with Mirissa, that is about 84 fewer sunshine hours in the month.
The lower temperatures can be welcome for sightseeing, but Kandy is not a January sun-and-beach alternative. It makes sense as a cultural stop between coastal regions rather than a destination chosen for the country's driest climate.
Nuwara Eliya is cooler still
Nuwara Eliya averages 25°C (77°F) during the day and 18°C (64°F) at night. Rainfall reaches 124 mm (4.9 in) over about six days, while sunshine is around 166 hours. Those figures are very different from the tropical coast.
This is one of the reasons a single “Sri Lanka in January” temperature is not very useful. Within one trip you can move from 31°C (88°F) beach weather in Negombo to much milder highland conditions.
West coast or south coast in January?
The west coast is drier. Negombo averages 48 mm (1.9 in) compared with 78 mm (3.1 in) in Hikkaduwa, 86 mm (3.4 in) in Mirissa and 89 mm (3.5 in) in Weligama. The difference in sunshine is tiny: Negombo has 248 hours, while the south-coast destinations have around 250.
So the decision is not really about sunshine. It is about whether you value the lowest rainfall total or the broader south-coast itinerary. For a short beach stop near the airport, Negombo has stronger climate figures. For a longer coastal journey, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa and Weligama remain excellent.

Which coast has the best weather in Sri Lanka in January?
The west and south coasts are the clear choices. Negombo is the driest of the popular coastal destinations in the verified data, while Hikkaduwa, Mirissa and Weligama are slightly wetter but just as sunny. Temperatures remain close to 30°C (86°F) throughout these areas.
If your trip is designed around beaches, start on the west or south coast and add the highlands for contrast. January is exactly the kind of month when Sri Lanka's regional climate matters: excellent beach weather can exist on one side of the island while another coast is still influenced by its wetter season.
