In the middle of Turkey lies the Cappadocia region, a beautiful and almost extraterrestrial landscape of worn stone peaks, towers, valleys and gorges created by volcanic eruptions and erosion for millions of years. The best view of this special landscape is from an hot air balloon during sunrise. An unforgettable experience that belongs on your bucket list.
As you can see on the video the landscape here is really amazing and because it consists of several gorges and valleys the pilot of the hot air balloon can fly very low in many places. You will hang between the beautifully shaped rock walls. Pretty spectacular!
How to get there
Cappadocia is an area in central Turkey. The best eco-friendly way to travel is by train. High-speed trains connect Istanbul with Ankara and Konya via Eskişehir. From Konya you can continue to Cappadocia by bus or rental car (232 km/144 miles, 4 hours). You can also fly directly to Kaysiri, taking you directly in the heart of Cappadocia. The best start point for a balloon flight is Görome.
Where to book
In Görome you can book a balloon flight on every street corner. A balloon flight costs about 180 US dollar per person (2020), depending on which company you go with and how many people are in the basket. Make sure you check on Tripadvisor first if they have good reviews.Where to stay
A special place to stay is called Kelebek Special Cave Hotel. It has an incredible location with breath taking views (see picture) of the balloons in the morning.
The staff is wonderful and we loved that they serve an "Organic breakfast" from their own organic farm. On booking.com they get a well deserved review of 9.4.
If you are looking for a unique place to stay in Cappadocia we recommend the Anatolian Houses Cave Hotel. Everything is great about this hotel. You will really enjoy cooling off in the pool in the afternoons whilst sipping wine from the taps. You can have a room perched at the top of a rock cave with breathtaking views. The upper roof terrace is also a nice place to watch the hot air balloons at sunrise. Breakfast was extremely good, having so many options (hot and cold). On booking.com they get an average rating of 8.9.
Best time to visit
Flights operate from April to September, but just keep in mind that July and August will be extremely hot. Click here for more climate information in Cappadocia.
