A yoga ashram in paradise

The Bahamas are known for its white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, many luxury hotels and impressive golf resorts. Since we don’t feel very attracted to these luxury fancy hotels we were excited to hear the Bahamas also has a Sivananda Yoga Ashram on one of its islands. There's nothing like waking up to the sound of birds chirping before going to morning meditation at a tropical paradise.

Sivananda Ashram is a traditional Ashram that also offers yoga vacations. A yoga vacation includes morning meditation, two yoga practices a day and an evening lecture. Every morning and evening all the residents that stay there sing (chant) together. All meals they serve are healthy and vegetarian. Most people chose to stay in tents which are comfortable, have electricity, a light, fan, closet and a night stand.

Why would you chose a yoga holiday? Well, one learns to get in touch with deep rest, well-being and a new body fitness. The other person feels happier and clearer afterwards, even knows what he or she wants in life sometimes. Still another feels that frustration and reluctance have subsided and feels more comfortable with how-it-is. All important skills and insights, sometimes even life-changing.

Sivanada yoga Ashram is a great place to discover more about the philosophy behind yoga. The teachers are genuine and deeply committed. They teach their beliefs (rooted in dharmic principles) and if you are new to the practice it could be a great introduction. They also have workshops ranging from Qigong to Christian Mystics to Chanting Om.

The hatha yoga is very good and you won't be pushed to do anything you can't manage. There are both beginner and intermediate yoga classes to choose from. After a class you can enjoy the beach which is absolutely amazing. The water is crystal clear and calm.

I have been to many spiritual places and Ashrams in my life and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time at Sivananda Ashram. However if you are an experienced spiritual seeker it might be not the best place to choose. Of course you can still get much out of it because it always depends on your own intention and your own discipline, but there are other Ashrams in the world that touch you on a different deeper level.
