Captivated by the unrivaled landscape and in search of the perfect spot to fish for salmon and trout, Europeans (especially the British) discovered Norway's fjords at the end of the 19th century. The Geirangerfjord, stretching 16 km (10 miles) with its towering cliffs, was – and still is – considered a highlight, showcasing Norway at its most inspiring.

Take in the view from the Ornevegen (Eagle Road), which runs from Åndalsnes to Geiranger. Completed in 1952, the road's hair-raising hairpin bends are still regarded as a remarkable feat of engineering. Stop at the Åndalsnes bend for an unforgettable view of the fjord winding through the valley. Another winding route, from Åndalsnes to Valldal, is the Trollstigen (Troll Path), which passes through one of Norway’s most remote regions.

Tourists visiting this fjord, which is not the most easily accessible but is considered by many to be the most popular, can choose from a variety of activities – a half-day boat tour, salmon fishing, hiking or cycling, visiting abandoned farmhouses only reachable by foot, or an excursion to the Jostedalsbreen, Europe’s largest glacier, with spectacular waterfalls that bear names like the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil. A great base for exploring the area around the Geirangerfjord and the stunning Norangsfjord is the Union Hotel.

This is one of the oldest "fjord castles" that became popular at the end of the 19th century. Restored and modernized, it remains the most renowned hotel and spa in the region: Norwegian King Harald and Queen Sonja celebrated their silver wedding anniversary here in 1993. You can even bathe in the original bath of German Emperor Wilhelm (who stayed here in the middle of his fifty-year reign) if you're lucky enough to book room 12.
