There is one day most Dutch people look forward to and it is called Kingsday. The day the Dutch celebrate the Kings birthday. This day usually combines perfectly with a lot of alcohol, music festivals and you are allowed to sell all your old stuff on the street. Something you want to experience once in your life and add to the bucket list if you ask us.
Especially the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, is very popular among the Dutch and foreign tourists. Expect a city dressed in orange and around every corner you will find a stage with dj’s, live music or 12 year olds singing traditional Dutch music.
The Vondelpark is full with children all selling their toys but also performing their talents. The canals are filled with boats with people on them having a great time. It is a day how you would want the world to be daily.
However when it gets darker the atmosphere sometimes changes and people get a bit drunk. That’s why Kingsday finishes pretty early (9 pm), but you could always find a club where you can dance all night.
Where to stay?
If you would like to stay in Amsterdam during Kingsday we recommend to stay in the city center so you are close to all the action. If you have budget we definitely recommend the Pulitzer hotel in Amsterdam. This hotel is fantastic and the location is great right in the city center. The building is absolutely gorgeous and it has a delicious restaurant. When we stayed there the room was immaculate and we would definitely come back.
