Indonesia in July: Bali, Java or Lombok?

July is one of the strongest months for dry weather across Bali, Lombok and parts of Java, but the details still matter. Kuta Lombok and the Gili Islands are the driest destinations in this comparison, averaging only 27 mm (1.1 in) of rain. Bali is only slightly wetter and combines 28°C (82°F) days in Denpasar with 248 hours of sunshine and a 27°C (81°F) sea. Yogyakarta is also relatively dry at 51 mm (2 in), while Jakarta is hotter at 32°C (90°F) and receives more rain. If beach weather is the goal, Bali and Lombok both perform very well, with Lombok having the edge on rainfall and Bali offering an especially balanced combination of warmth, sunshine and sea temperature.

Bali has an excellent all-round July climate
Denpasar averages 28°C (82°F) during the day and 25°C (77°F) at night. Rainfall is 53 mm (2.1 in) over only about two days, while sunshine reaches around 248 hours. The sea remains very warm at 27°C (81°F).
Those figures explain why July works so well for a classic Bali trip. The month is warm without the heavier rainfall of the wet season, and the ocean remains comfortably tropical. The low number of rainy days is especially useful when a trip includes both beaches and day trips.
Inland, Ubud is slightly cooler, averaging 27°C (81°F) during the day and 22°C (72°F) at night. Rainfall rises modestly to 62 mm (2.4 in) over around three days, with 245 hours of sunshine.
The slightly cooler nights make Ubud a useful counterpoint to the coast. Travelers combining inland Bali with the beaches can expect broadly favorable July weather in both, with only a small increase in rainfall at elevation.
Lombok is drier than Bali
Kuta Lombok averages 30°C (86°F) during the day and 24°C (75°F) at night. Rainfall is just 27 mm (1.1 in) over roughly three days, with around 241 hours of sunshine. That is about half Denpasar's rainfall total.
The Gili Islands show almost identical conditions: 29°C (84°F) days, 24°C (75°F) nights, 27 mm (1.1 in) of rain and around 241 hours of sunshine. If the priority is simply to maximize the chance of dry island weather, Lombok and the Gilis have the strongest figures in this comparison.
The practical difference between Bali and Lombok is smaller than the rainfall totals might suggest, because both have only a few rainy days. Bali is already very dry by tropical standards in July. Lombok simply pushes the odds further toward rain-free conditions.
Yogyakarta is a strong cultural choice on Java
Yogyakarta averages 30°C (86°F) during the day and 21°C (70°F) at night. Rainfall is 51 mm (2 in) over about four days. Weather & Climate does not show a verified sunshine total on the monthly page, so it is left out here rather than estimated.
The relatively low rainfall makes July one of the more useful months for a Java itinerary centered on temples and the city. Indonesia's official tourism site highlights Borobudur as one of the country's major cultural landmarks, and Yogyakarta is the natural base for many travelers visiting the region.
Jakarta is the hottest and sunniest city in the comparison
Jakarta averages 32°C (90°F) during the day and 24°C (75°F) at night. Rainfall totals 73 mm (2.9 in) over around nine days, while sunshine reaches an impressive 282 hours. The sea is also exceptionally warm at 29°C (84°F).
Jakarta therefore has more sunshine than Bali or Lombok in the Weather & Climate averages, but it is also hotter and rain falls on more days. It is a strong month for the capital in climate terms, yet most travelers choosing between Bali, Lombok and Java for a leisure trip will value the island combination of beaches and lower rainfall more.

The number of rainy days reinforces the pattern. Denpasar has only about two rainy days, Kuta Lombok three, Ubud three and the Gili Islands four. Jakarta has nine. For a trip built around beaches and predictable dry weather, Bali and Lombok are both considerably stronger than the capital.
Bali or Lombok in July?
Lombok is drier. Kuta Lombok receives 27 mm (1.1 in) compared with Denpasar's 53 mm (2.1 in), and daytime temperatures are about 2°C (36°F) warmer. Sunshine is very similar: 241 hours in Kuta Lombok versus 248 in Denpasar.
Bali's advantage is not climate superiority but balance. 28°C (82°F) days, a 27°C (81°F) sea and only two rainy days already provide excellent weather. If you are choosing purely on the numbers, Lombok wins for dryness. If you want a wider Bali itinerary with beaches, Ubud and cultural sights, there is little reason to avoid July on weather grounds.
Can you swim in Indonesia in July?
Yes. Denpasar has a verified sea temperature of 27°C (81°F), and Jakarta's sea averages 29°C (84°F). Those figures confirm that July's drier weather does not come with cool water. Bali remains very comfortable for swimming even though July is among the cooler months of the year on land.
The Gili Islands and Lombok also have tropical air temperatures throughout the month. Even without a verified water-temperature figure on their July pages, the low rainfall and warm days make them strong beach destinations.

Bali, Java or Lombok in July?
If climate is the main factor, Bali and Lombok are the strongest choices. Lombok is the driest, while Bali combines low rainfall with very high sunshine and a warm sea. Java is more mixed: Yogyakarta has excellent rainfall figures, whereas Jakarta is hotter and sees rain on more days.
For a beach-first trip, choose Bali or Lombok. For temples and city culture, Yogyakarta is a very strong July option. The useful thing about this month is that you do not have to choose between warmth and dry weather in much of southern Indonesia. You can have both.
