Mérida is a laidback backpacker city and is full of students. The university city is the cultural center of the Andes and with a special location at 1700 meters a must for every traveler. The city is also relatively rich and safe. And the area has a huge list of potential activities: horseback riding, sport climbing, rafting, mountain biking and paragliding.
Mérida is located in the west of Venezuela, towards the border with Colombia. The Venezuelan Andes here draws a heightened, cooling line through the otherwise tropical country. A mountain range of 400 kilometers long and one hundred kilometers wide. So Mérida is the perfect starting point for various tours in the surrounding mountains and the National Parks with mountain forests and beautiful waterfalls. The romantic villages that are located around Mérida give you a beautiful view of the Andes mountains and are well worth a visit.
Mérida itself has a Spanish colonial character and is a city with a rich history, colonial buildings and authentic houses. The most characteristic are the numerous parks where it is always busy. Classical cars and vans drive the narrow streets.
Another important attraction in Mérida is the highest cable car in the world, the Teleferico. It takes you in four stages from 1600 meters to 4765 meters. The total route is around 13 kilometers long and you end up at Pico Espejo (4700m) with a breathtaking view over the Andes.

Best time to visit
Mérida is much cooler than most cities in Venezuela with an average max temperature of 24 degrees Celsius (75 Fahrenheit). The temperature is pretty consistent year round.
