Ireland Ireland tightens corona measures and closes non-essential shops

Ireland is going to tighten its coronary measures for the period of at least one month. That is what Prime Minister Micheál Martin announced on Wednesday. He said the number of positive tests in his country has increased to much.

"We must return to full restrictions for a period of at least one month," Martin said. He called the situation "very serious."

The new measures include the closure of non-essential retail and gyms. The measures will take place on Thursday evening. Martin said it is necessary after a 61 percent increase in confirmed cases over the course of the past week. The Prime Minister also said that people should stay at home from midnight on Wednesday, except to travel for work, education and other essential purposes. As of Wednesday evening, no social gatherings are allowed, even on New Year's Eve. Small weddings and funerals can still go on.

Ireland Tourists have to restrict their movements for 14 days in Ireland

You have to restrict your movements for 14 days if you arrive into Ireland from another location that is not on the COVID-19 Green List.

This includes:

  • Irish citizens coming home
  • people with no symptoms
  • people who have tested negative for the virus in another location

The requirement to restrict your movement means:

  • do not use public transport if possible. If you have no option but to use public transport, you must wear a face covering. The wearing of a face covering is required by law when using public transport, unless you have a diagnosed medical reason
  • do not visit others
  • do not meet face-to-face with anyone who is at higher risk from COVID-19
  • do not go to the shop unless absolutely necessary.
