Covid update for South Africa

South Africa South Africa out of lockdown

South African President Ramaphosa says the spike in coronary infections has passed. The number of infections per day has fallen from 12,000 to 5,000 per day. As of Monday, a large number of corona measures will be lifted; alcohol and tobacco may be sold again and restaurants and cafes may reopen if they comply with strict hygiene rules.

With this decision, the South African government hopes to revive the economy. Before the corona pandemic, the country was already in a bad economic state. The lockdown has further increased the number of unemployment, including in the hospitality, beer, wine and beverage industries.

Despite the severe lockdown, the number of recorded coronary infections in South Africa has risen to almost 580,000. At least 11,500 South Africans have died.
