One island, seven days, 450,000 festival lovers from over a hundred countries, freedom, ecstatic music & an amazing energy; welcome to the Sziget Festival. In this article I'm going to tell you all about it and I'm also sure after reading you will buy your ticket. This festival needs to be on your bucket list.
Sziget Hungary is the largest open-air festival in Europe. Sziget means 'island' in Hungarian and the reason might be that it is held on an island in the middle of the Danube in Budapest. ;) The world of Sziget is actually a city in a city. The festival takes place seven days and you can enjoy more than 1,000 performances on 60 different stages. Think about acts like Placebo, Robert Plant (ex- Led Zepplin), Iggy and the Stooges, Scissor Sisters and one of my favorites Radiohead.
Still, Sziget has so much more to offer than music. The wonderful fact that you can camp with your tent on an island, in the middle of the big city of Budapest is already amazing. But I loved it that you can put that tent almost anywhere you want. For example, there is a group of campers very close to the Mainstage and a handful of metal fans have tactically put their whole camp next to the large metalstage Hammerworld.
The organization of Sziget is very relaxed. You don't have to work your way through all kinds of security locks all the time and this makes you feel very free. Sziget is therefore an ideal holiday escape destination. You have the possibilities to bungy-jump, shoot yourself up in a catapult or whizz down a cable car.
Sziget has an incredibly international character. Germans, Italians, French, Hungarians and Dutch; You'll come across all nationalities. And don't think there's just rock, pop and techno music on the menu. No, the tones of classical, jazz, reggae and blues music also fills your ears. With more than 60 stages you can imagine that the choice is huge. You'll find a stage on every corner. Large or nice small-scale hidden among the trees. Personally, I find the best way to explore a festival just walking around and see what you come across along the way. The Main Stage is the biggest stage of the festival, where the most famous acts perform.
I thought the Colosseum was a unique place to throw a party. You enter the stage by climbing into a wolf's head. Then you will be treated to the finest underground and progressive electronic sounds between stacked pallets. No one wanted the party to stop, even on the last night it remained restless for a long time!
